Field of Dreams

The Mountains

Just 2-hours away from the crowds of Cape Town, the impressive Langeberg mountains have been a source of quiet inspiration for adventurers and artists from long before 1887 when the Cogmanskloof Pass was hewn through.

Fields of Dreams

Hidden away between the east and west Langeberg mountains, Montagu is aptly known as the ‘mountain mecca’. The attraction of the mountains comes not only from hiking or biking across them, but from the trickling rivers and the ochre rocks, the hardy spekboom succulents, and the petals of the vibrant yellow and pink sewejaartjies that dot the mountain faces.

Hiking trails can be enjoyed for all levels of experience, and fitness from a gentle ramble on Loverswalk to a tough climb towards the Bloupunt summit.

The Town

An out-of-town escape since its founding, Montagu continues to attract day-trippers and holiday visitors looking for an escape from the city noise and to discover its arts, history and natural beauty.

Lovingly preserved examples of Cape Dutch and Georgian houses and monuments line the town’s main street. Hundred-year-old farmhouses and townhouses remain as family homes passed through generations or have been brought back to life as galleries, restaurants, museums and boutiques.

The thermal springs that filter through the rocks from below the mountains continue to hold an appeal for visitors, but it’s the star-filled Karoo skies, the rich flora and fauna and the Montagu charm that is truly healing.
